Kitchener Residence

This three-storey renovation and addition project thoughtfully transforms a Category II historic Westmount home by blending its traditional architectural charm with a modern, functional layout. The homeowners, a family of five who purchased the property as their primary residence, enlisted RC to reimagine the outdated design. Originally built in 1919, the home required a significant architectural intervention to meet the evolving needs of contemporary family living.
A defining feature of the renovation is the new three-storey grand curved staircase, which harmonizes classic and modern elements. Its sweeping curves and understated yet sophisticated details create a light and airy ambiance, enhancing the arrival hall and circulation spaces. The previously compartmentalized kitchen and dining areas were reconfigured into a spacious open-concept layout, better suited to the family's lifestyle. A generously sized white oak walk-in pantry offers additional workspace and storage. To further enhance the space, the former rear porch was converted into a lounge and sunroom, allowing ample morning light to flood the kitchen and dining areas. Throughout the home, oak parquet flooring provides warmth and continuity.
On the second floor, circulation was strategically reorganized to enhance sightlines and improve access to an existing sunroom. A newly added three-by-six-foot skylight transforms a once dark, dead-end corridor into a vibrant, inviting passage. The primary suite was expanded to include a formal anteroom, his-and-her walk-in closets, and a spacious bathroom with a private powder room. Careful attention was given to the flow between these spaces, ensuring a seamless connection throughout the suite.
In keeping with the neighbourhood’s strict historic preservation guidelines, the home’s facade was meticulously restored with minimal alterations. The previously disordered rear facade was simplified and regularized to harmonize with the overall architectural integrity of the home.
