Hampstead House
2 900 ft²
AIA Vermont - Citation Award - 2018
For this house renovation in the Hampstead neighborhood of Montreal, RobitailleCurtis was hired to assist a young doctor and his family with the modernization of a home that had been occupied by the previous owners for more than 40 years. A vintage 1960's property, the existing house was divided into a series of small rooms with a decor from a bygone era. Our clients wanted to freshen up the look and feel of their new home, and granted us full-license to re-imagine how best to revamp the dated house into a home designed for a modern family.
Our first instincts were to open the spaces to one another to create a less compartmentalized living experience. We demolished walls separating the kitchen and dining room, as well as partitions between the living room and den. Large expanses of new modern glazing were introduced to bring daylight into the home, and to connect the main living areas to the outdoors as well as to one another.
By combining the kitchen and dining areas into one large room, a generous and inviting space was created where the family can easily interact or entertain. We designed fully custom cabinetry, painted a smoky blue-gray color and paired with Carrara marble countertops and white-tinted ash floors. The millwork, an eight-seat white oak dining table and accompanying chairs, and walnut counter stools were all fabricated by Montreal-based company Kastella. Overhead, the globe-shaped lighting fixtures with brass accents were handmade by the client in his spare time.
The large glass doors open to a new south-facing terrace, extending the livable area to the outdoors during the warmer months. Overall, this project produced a dramatic ‘before and after’ transformation that still surprises today.
